“We feel bad about bringing our sins out into the light of God’s countenance. But that’s the only place where they are forgiven.”— Derek Prince
Light is the radiance that reveals the beauty of the world we live in. At the dawn of creation, it was the very first element God called forth from the formless void. God Himself is light, and in the Garden of Eden His glorious presence lit their very souls of Adam and Eve.
The Word of God, from which that first beam of light emerged, is light. It was given to guide humanity’s steps. But when our ancestors disobeyed God’s Word, darkness returned, filling their souls with fear and driving them away from the very source of light.
When Adam and Eve discovered the consequences of sin, their instinct was to hide and cover themselves. Why did they retreat when they heard God's voice? Because the light of God's presence exposes the nakedness that sin brings.
Sadly, that same instinct to run from the light still plagues humanity. We try to hide our sins behind pretence or indifference. But this only deepens our bondage and multiplies the weight of condemnation.
God, in mercy, provided a remedy for sin that required nearness to Him. The covering of animal skin He gave Adam and Eve could only be received by coming close, by stepping into the light. In that moment, they learned the consequence of rebellion, the need for remission, and the hope for restoration. This encounter set a timeless pattern: it is only in the light of His presence that we receive the covering of His atonement.
As we step into the light of His presence, His Spirit illuminates our spirit, searching the depths of our being through the light of His Word (Proverbs 20:27). The Word of God pierces beyond appearances, discerning our deepest thoughts and uncovering the hidden motives of our hearts (Hebrews 4:12, 13).
In that sacred exposure, we are not condemned but gently reminded of Christ’s finished work. And as we yield, His blood cleanses us, lifting the burden of guilt and setting our hearts free.
When we avoid God’s light, deception hardens our hearts and sears our consciences. But when we run toward it, even in weakness, we are not shamed but strengthened to walk in our true identity, revealed by the Word. A step at a time, we are empowered to walk in the light.
The more we remain in the shadows, the more vulnerable we become to deeper works of sin and rebellion. But when, like David, we stop hiding and step into God’s light, we can declare this ensuing blessing: "Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered [atoned by God]." (Psalm 32:1)
May we be found walking in the light, not hiding from it. For in His light, we find cleansing, communion, and confidence to live free.
