The purpose of grace is to grant us access into his presence every day. Grace qualifies us for the relationship we could never earn on our merits.— Wayne Jacobsen
Perez’s story is a powerful testament to the transformative and unmerited favor of God’s grace—a force that redefines natural order and human expectations. Despite his unconventional and morally complex beginnings, Perez became a crucial part of God’s redemptive plan, entering the lineage of King David and ultimately Jesus Christ. How does someone from such a background become part of the greatest narrative of redemption? The answer lies in the mystery of grace, which qualifies the disqualified and opens doors that no human effort could.
Grace is a recurring theme throughout Scripture, particularly in God’s sovereign choices that defy societal norms. In the culture of ancient Israel, the firstborn son traditionally held a place of privilege, carrying the family’s inheritance and legacy. Yet God repeatedly disrupted this order: Isaac over Ishmael, Jacob over Esau, Joseph over Reuben, Ephraim over Manasseh, and now Perez over Zerah.
This pattern underscores that grace, not human merit, defines destiny. Grace operates beyond qualifications, human logic, or societal expectations. While the world values credentials, appearance, and status, grace is rooted in God’s sovereign will. For Perez, it wasn’t his position in the womb or the midwife’s declaration that determined his breakthrough; it was God’s purpose and favor.
Grace not only transforms lives but also empowers divine assignments. Consider Gideon, a man from the weakest clan in Israel, whom God called to deliver the nation from the Midianites. Despite Gideon’s perceived inadequacy, God declared, “I will be with you. And you will destroy the Midianites as if you were fighting against one man”
(Judges 6:16 NLT). Grace took Gideon from fear to triumph, just as it elevated Joseph from slavery to leadership in Egypt.
Yet, grace is not an excuse for passivity. It complements discipline, humility, and faith. The apostle Paul, despite his immense labor in ministry, acknowledged, “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain”
(1 Corinthians 15:10). Grace amplifies our efforts and enables us to achieve what human strength alone cannot.
Ultimately, Perez’s breakout moment points to Jesus Christ, the embodiment of grace. For believers, grace is more than unmerited favor—it is divine enablement. Romans 11:6 reminds us, “If it is by grace, it is no longer conditioned on works or anything men have done. Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace.”
This grace allows us to step into God’s purposes, not by striving but through His mercy and empowerment.
Perez’s story is a prophetic reminder of the breakthrough that grace brings. Just as Perez emerged unexpectedly, propelled by divine favor, we too can enter into God’s plans—not by our merit, but by His abundant grace.
