You can’t outsource your child’s faith formation. What takes place in your home profoundly impacts the spiritual health of your child.— Dr. Lawson Murray
Parenting is not just a biological process but a spiritual mandate, especially for Christian parents called to instil faith, hope, and love in their children. The story of Jochebed, the mother of Aaron, Miriam and Moses serves as a profound example of visionary parenting in the Bible. The narrative in Exodus provides invaluable lessons for today’s parents who aim to raise godly children amid challenging times.
Living under the threat of Pharaoh’s decree to kill all newborn Hebrew boys, Jochebed's faith-driven actions underscored her unwavering trust in God and her commitment to protecting her children. With eyes of faith, she saw that her baby was no ordinary child and took the risk of hiding him. She believed God's promises to her people and protected Moses by hiding him for three months, then placing him in a basket on the Nile River (Exodus 2:2-3).
This wasn’t merely an act of desperation but a profound act of faith, trusting that God would protect and preserve her son. Further, she strategically placed Miriam to watch over Moses as he floated on the Nile. Miriam’s quick thinking led her to suggest that Jochebed herself be the child’s nurse, ensuring that Moses would be raised by his own mother during his early years, allowing her to instil in him a foundation of faith (Exodus 2:7-9).
Jochebed’s ingenuity in using a basket to save Moses illustrates her hopeful creativity in the face of danger. She adapted her actions to align with God’s will, setting the stage for divine intervention when Pharaoh's daughter discovered and adopted Moses—unknowingly fostering the future deliverer of Israel.
Ultimately, Jochebed had to trust God completely by returning Moses to Pharaoh’s daughter. This act of letting go was a profound expression of faith in God’s plan for her son’s life—a plan that would lead him to deliver the Israelites from slavery (Exodus 2:5-10).
Jochebed's parenting also influenced the lives of her other children, Aaron and Miriam, both of whom played significant roles in Israel’s history. Aaron, as the first high priest, aided Moses in leading and interceding for Israel during the Exodus (Exodus 28:1). Miriam grew to become a prophetic leader, and her role during the crossing of the Red Sea is celebrated in Exodus 15:20-21. Her faith and actions left a legacy that shaped the destiny of Israel.
Like Jochebed, parents today are called to use discernment, godly wisdom, and creativity in raising their children. This could involve finding innovative ways to incorporate spiritual and moral lessons into daily life or creating a home environment that reflects Christian values.
By doing so, children will be better equipped to face future challenges, just as Jochebed prepared Moses for his future role. Ultimately, every parent, like Jochebed and Hannah, must through prayer and surrender release their children into God’s hands, trusting that He loves them more and has a greater plan for their lives.
Let us, in faith, partner with God and rise to this high calling—raising children to love and serve God passionately, believing that He will direct their paths for His glory and their good. With His help, we too can parent with vision, setting the stage for Him to do extraordinary things through our simple obedience, trust and faithfulness.
